A View From The Top

Hunter Valley 1966 Syrah (Shiraz) Vineyard

Perspective is a funny thing. Everyone in the industry seems to have a different approach to harvest time. For us, this is the moment it all comes together. Did we irrigate too much, or too little? Did each variety get the right amount of sun? Have we picked at the best time? It is the point of no return and the difference between success, or not.
As an organic winemaker, it seems simple - support a proactive, natural cycle of replenishment and balance. For me, the management of an agricultural environment is not just about growing good grapes, harvest to harvest. It is about the bigger picture. Our team works to improve our farming methods so that we can enhance and support a natural system, constantly. We want our grapes harvested this year, and in each successive year for decades, to produce wine that is testament to a considered and nurtured process; with flavour that suggests a sense of natural-ness and continuity.

This year I took another new approach – quite literally! From the top of the harvester our 1966 planting of Hunter Syrah never looked better. The vines looked strong and there were plenty of grapes. Looking over a flourishing vineyard, we can’t wait to share this year’s vintage with you. 2015 - wine with body and soul.

Sauv Blanc En Route

Limited Edition 2014 Organic NZ Sauvignon Blanc

Just as they did 100 years ago, our Kiwi mates have our backs, once again! We have completely sold out of our Sauvignon Blanc. While our 2015 vintage is bubbling away in the tank, it will not be available until mid-year.

Luckily, our partner certified organic vineyard in New Zealand, has come to the rescue, and we are able to offer our members a limited edition 2014 Organic Sauvignon Blanc, currently en route from Marlborough, New Zealand.

Hunter 2015 Vintage

What To Look Out For?

Like all farmers, we plan for the worst and hope for the best. We suppose it is good to put a plan into action, every now and then. We must admit it certainly wasn’t our most difficult year, although a drenching and plenty of humidity through January and February left us a little nervous.

The good news is, the plan paid off. Our trellising and vineyard drainage, alongside some carefully timed applications of copper and lime protection and targeted biological sprays, kept the fungus at bay. It gave the grapes that essential bit of extra time in the sun - the flavour is excellent.

So, what does this mean for your wines from 2015 Hunter vintage?

Flavour. Warmer days towards the end of harvest encouraged the red varieties to fully ripen. The grapes were smaller, with a better flavour concentration.

Grape Colour. From light reds to inky purple-black in hue, we are looking forward to a lot of colour in our reds this vintage.

Plenty of Fruit. Despite the trials and tribulations of the Hunter season, in the end, yields were comparatively good for Hunter Semillon, Verdelho, Chardonnay, Chambourcin and Syrah (Shiraz). This means you can be assured that the limited Reserve releases from the 2015 Hunter vintage are shaping up really well.
Syrah (Shiraz) freshly picked and full of beautiful colour.
