For all those Orange locals who have long asked Tamburlaine Organic Wines when they would be opening a cellar door in the region, the answer is nigh. The venue will be the renovated and historic Millthorpe General Store in Pym Street and will open for hosted wine tastings from Thursday, June 25.
The opening follows hot on the heels of the multi-award-winning organic winemakers’ expansion in the Orange Wine Region via the purchase of the former Cumulus winery facility at Cudal where it processed its 2020 fruit.
Tamburlaine Managing Director, Mark Davidson, said Tamburlaine has seen 35 years of providing exceptional cellar door service through its Hunter Valley operation and now is looking forward to supplementing the Orange Region visitor wine experience.
“The cellar door opening in the region is not before time given our involvement with Orange Region winemaking going back to 1989 and given the substantial vineyard holdings at Borenore and Belgravia,” Mark outlined.
“This venue will complement the already established cellar doors in Millthorpe of Angullong and Slow Wine Co. The destination couples food and wine tourism with history and heritage.
“Tamburlaine built its Hunter business on tourism and cellar door hospitality. Over the decades we created a substantial customer base for the wines, one customer group at a time.
“We can now continue this highly effective model of direct sales with Orange Region visitors and encourage our existing customers who have not necessarily been before, to travel to the region. We know that many customers are just waiting for the excuse to visit Orange and Millthorpe.
“Visitors to the cellar door can expect to sample a broad range of wine styles along with local gourmet products. Guests can relax, get a bottle of wine, and a cheese plate to enjoy with no rush, as our cellar door licence allows visitors to have a glass or two and stay if they wish, after 5 pm.
“Another exciting development will be the inclusion of organic vineyard and winery experiences in the near future.
“Heading up the new cellar door will be Cargo local, Phoenix Kamsteeg. Phoenix loves the industry and has real energy and enthusiasm to provide a first-class experience for visitors to Millthorpe. Matthew Mortimer will also be part of the Millthorpe team.”
The Millthorpe Tamburlaine Organic Wines Cellar Door will initially be open Thursday through to Sunday, but special direct bookings can be made for small groups by phoning Phoenix directly on 0249 984 299 or jump online at Tamburlaine.com.au and hover on CELLAR DOOR, to proceed to secure a group booking. Private group bookings are limited at this time to ten people per group due to COVID limitations.

Tamburlaine was established in 1966. In 1985 the Hunter winery was purchased by a small group of friends and relatives led by Managing Director, Head of Grape and Wine Production, Mark Davidson. Mark has built his long-term winemaking philosophy around Contemporary Organic practices in the vineyard and the winery. Through years of research and development, we have become one of Australia’s largest producers of organic wines with vineyards in the Hunter Valley and Orange region.
Named after Christopher Marlowe's famous play and character ‘Tamburlaine the Great’, we work to lead the way with our Contemporary Organics vision, successfully producing award-winning organic, vegan-friendly, low sulphur and no added sulphur wines.
